How to choose a mattress

This guide is here to narrow the field before you come in. You will still make the decision lying on the mattress — but knowing what to look for makes that part short.

1. How you sleep decides almost everything

There is no single best mattress. The right one keeps your spine level while you sleep, and the first thing that determines that is your sleeping position.

  • Side sleepers: The shoulder and hip are the widest points of the body and need to sink in while the waist stays supported. A mattress that is too firm compresses the shoulder and has you turning over all night. Medium-soft, conforming surfaces — memory foam, latex, pillow-top models — usually work better.
  • Back sleepers: The gap under the lower back needs filling. On a very soft mattress the hips drop and the lower back is left unsupported. Medium-firm suits most people.
  • Front sleepers: The hardest position. A soft mattress lets the stomach drop and arches the back, so a firmer surface is needed — and the pillow should be as low as possible.
  • If you change position: Fast-recovering materials — latex and pocket springs — are easier to move on. Memory foam recovers slowly, so you may feel resistance when turning.

2. Weight changes how firm a mattress feels

The same mattress does not feel the same at 60 kg and 100 kg. The heavier you are, the further you sink — so a mattress sold as “medium firm” can feel soft to a heavier sleeper.

If two people sharing a bed differ substantially in weight, there are two options: look at zoned models, or use two single mattresses side by side. The second is uncommon in homes here but standard practice in hotels.

3. Materials — what each one does

Pocket springs

Every spring sits in its own fabric pocket and works independently of its neighbours. In practice: you are not disturbed when the person beside you turns over. The gaps between the springs also give the best airflow of any construction — which matters if you sleep hot.

Common in Serta and King Koil models.

Memory foam (visco)

Softens with body heat, takes the shape of what touches it and spreads weight across a wide area. It makes a clear difference for anyone who wakes with pain at one specific point.

Its known drawback is heat retention. Gel-infused versions were developed to reduce that — the gel particles draw heat away from the surface.

Latex

Unlike memory foam it recovers very quickly, so there is no sinking feeling, and its open-cell structure passes air. Given that summer here runs six months, that is more than a spec-sheet detail.

Dunlop-process latex is denser and more durable; Talalay-process latex is lighter and softer.

Hybrid

Springs for support and airflow, foam or latex on top for conformity. It gives you both of the properties a single-material mattress makes you choose between, which is why it has become the most popular construction in recent years.

Short version: Sleep hot — pocket springs or latex. Pressure-point pain — memory foam. Both apply — hybrid. Not sure — try all three side by side; it takes five minutes to tell.

4. Does a double-sided mattress really matter

Yes. On single-sided mattresses the weight always lands on the same surface, which leads to dipping over time. Double-sided models are turned at intervals, so wear is shared between two faces and the dip starts far later.

The trade-off is weight: turning one is a two-person job. That is why most of them have carry handles on the sides.

5. When to replace a mattress

The usual answer is seven to ten years, but three signs are more reliable than the calendar:

  1. You wake up stiff and it wears off during the day — the mattress is not supporting you.
  2. There is a visible dip where you sleep.
  3. You notice you sleep better in other beds — hotels, guest rooms.

6. Sizes

The common sizes in Cyprus are 90×190 cm single and 150×200 / 160×200 cm double. If you are over about 1.85 m, the 200 cm length genuinely matters — on a 190 your feet reach the edge.

Custom sizes are possible. Remember that changing the mattress size also changes the base, headboard and bedding sizes.

7. How to test one in the store

  • Lie in the position you actually sleep in. Sitting on the edge and pressing with your hand tells you nothing.
  • Stay at least five minutes. Everything is comfortable for thirty seconds.
  • Use your own pillow or ask us for one that suits your position. The wrong pillow makes the right mattress feel wrong.
  • If you are buying a double, test it together. A mattress that feels right alone can behave differently with a second person on it.

Next step

Once you have narrowed it down, have a look at our mattresses, or just call us. A few questions on the phone usually get it down to two or three models; the rest takes five minutes in the store.
