What a headboard is for

A headboard changes the look of a bedroom more than anything you can hang on the wall. It also does real work: it stops pillows sliding down behind the bed, protects the wall, and gives you something to lean against if you read in bed.

Types

  • Button-tufted: Buttons pull the fabric in to form the classic diamond pattern. Suits traditional rooms and high ceilings.
  • Panelled: Horizontal or vertical sections. Quieter, better in modern rooms.
  • Cushion-form: Soft padded blocks. The most comfortable to lean against.
  • Framed: An upholstered panel inside a carved wooden frame — ornament in the frame, plain surface inside.

Size and height

Headboards are made to your bed width rather than picked from a size list. Height is decided against the ceiling and the total height of mattress plus base — a short headboard behind a thick mattress on a high base simply disappears. We work all three out together when measuring.

Note: Headboards can be bought on their own or as a set with a base. Bought as a set, both are cut from the same roll of fabric, so there is no risk of a shade difference.
