With La-Z-Boy the real choice is not the colour or the fabric — it is the mechanism. The difference between the three shows up in daily use.
- Fixed: The base stays put and the chair does not rock. For people who find the swing distracting, and for chairs going close to a wall. A side lever opens the footrest.
- Rocker: The chair swings back and forth. The choice for settling a baby or for a long read. Reclining still works off the side lever.
- Power: Back and footrest adjust separately at the touch of a button. On a mechanical recliner those two movements are linked; with power you can stop anywhere in between. It needs a socket.
Two things the brand is known for
La-Z-Boy invented the recliner in the United States in 1927 and is known for two things. First, a four-sided one-piece frame — the reason the chair holds its shape over years. Second, a patented back mechanism that locks at sixteen separate positions, so there is more than one stop between upright and flat.
Every model has a three-stage footrest, and the foam is cut separately for each section — seat, back and arms are not the same density.
Size and placement
How much room a chair needs behind it when reclined varies by model. If you are planning to put it against a wall, let us check that before you order — opening one up and measuring takes five minutes in store.
